Continuing the DiceLoader club summer league statistical analysis, we now turn our attention to the stats of the Japanese J League. We look at the statistics of the 2022 season and compare the J League to the 2o major domestic world leagues. We will analyse the data on goals, clean sheets, both teams to scores, matches over set goals, corners and more.
The Japanese J League runs from February to December, so it is a great summer league when the main European leagues are on a break. Japan is currently eight hours ahead of the UK, and as most of the Japanese J League fixtures are played in the Japanese evening, we get late morning starts which are most frequently at 11:00am.
This DiceLoader article is one of a series on the summer leagues, so please also check out our articles using statistical analysis on the US MLS, the Swedish Allsvenkan, the Brazilian Serie A and the Chinese Super League. All these leagues are heavily supported by the DiceLoader club where you will find excellent AI based predictions, detailed statistics and in depth articles on all 2023 fixtures within the membership area of our site.
In line with the trend on all our summer league articles we will start our analysis with goals.
Of the top 20 domestic football leagues in the world, the Japanese J league has a slightly below average amount of goals per game. Coming in at 13th in the league with and average of 2.52 goals per game in 2022, the average goals per game are what could best be described as average.
Looking deeper into why the average goals per game is in the lower half of the table we see that in 2022 the Japanese J League had the lowest average for games with greater than 0.5 goals. With only 88% of games having more than 0.5 goals in 2022, this is the lowest percentage across all of the 20 domestic leagues. Comparing this to the highest average for games that are over 0.5 goals, which is the Scottish Premiership with 97%, this is quite a significant difference.
But the Japanese J League is not bottom of the table for overall goal average per game, so it must pick up some goals in other over goal stats also. As a league average the Japanese J League did do better on over 1.5 goals (joint 14th in the 20 leagues, with 71%), over 2.5 goals (15th with 45%) and over 3.5 goals (12th with 26%). In 2022 it seems that there were a lot of close games where the deadlock was hard to break.
How did the Japanese J League then do with clean sheets? Pretty well as to be expected. Through 2022, and using the average for all teams, a team kept a clean sheet 31% of the times. This is the joint third highest average of clean sheets across all the top 20 domestic leagues in 2022. Greece topped this table with 35% followed by Portugal with 32% in 2022.
Let’s now look at Both Teams to Score. The Japanese J League had an average of 49% of their fixtures in 2022 where both teams scored. Comparing this average to the world’s top 20 domestic leagues in 2022 this is an average just in the lower half. It is the seventh lowest average across all the leagues, with the Greek Super League coming in lowest with 41%. Comparing this to the highest, which is the German Bundesliga One with 59% again we can see this is a healthy 9% less.
For corners, they are in the lower half on this stat also. They are ranked 16th in the world list for the amount of corners per game, with an average of 9.04.
Finally we’ll look at the match outcome percentages for the Japanese J League in 2022. There are again some interesting trends here. One in particular is the amount of draws. The Japanese J League has the highest percentage of matches that are drawn across the world’s top 20 domestic leagues. With 32% of the matches being drawn in 2022, this trend is one to keep an eye on. The lowest percentage of draws by a league in 2022 was 18% of matches, which is shared by both the Portugese Primeira Liga and the Scottish Premiership.
How does this high percentage of draws impact the home wins and away wins? It leaves the Japanese J League with the joint lowest home win percentage of the world’s top 20 leagues in 2022 at 40%. Compare this to the US MLS stats (which we cover in more detail in this free article here ) which had 49% of their matches ending in a home win, again, this is a pretty significant difference and one to keep an eye on in 2023. Away wins are also lower on average, coming in at 28% of the times in 2022. This is the 16th lowest across the world’s top 20 leagues.
So all in all, the Japanese J League is a very interesting league with some trends that could give you an advantage if known. Draws are frequent as are games that seem to play out with only a few goals.
