US MLS Statistics. I am liking them goals

A great summer football league to pay attention to is the US MLS. This is just one of the summer domestic leagues that our DiceLoader members benefit from (along with the Brazlian Serie A, the Japanese J League, the Swedish Allsvenken and the Chinese Super Leagues).

The US MLS brings all the glitz and glamour of a major American sport. But what type of football match does it produce? What kind of advantage can our DiceLoader members get from the AI predictions and the thousands of stats we collect on each US MLS fixture?

In this article we analyse the stats produced in 2022 for the US MLS and compare these key stats against the other 20 major domestic leagues in the world. We will also compare the stats of the US MLS on a range of markets so you our members can make informed decisions on what the typical likely outcomes will be.

Firstly let’s look at goals.

The good news is that if you like goals, there are typically plenty of them in the MLS. In 2022 the US MLS had the third highest average goals per game across the 20 major domestic leagues. With an average of 2.95 goals per game during the regular season, the US MLS was only beaten by the German Bundesliga One (3.15) and the Dutch Eredevisie (3.06). If you compare the US MLS 2.95 average goals per game to the English EFL LeagueTwo average of 2.36 goals per game, you can see why the US MLS is a great league for those who like the goals. Yee-Haa.

Next we will look at the typical match outcomes. Looking across the average match outcomes for the 20 major domestic leagues, the US MLS stands out in that it had the fewest away team wins on average last season. In 2022, away teams won 26% of the time in the US MLS. This is the lowest away win rate across all of the 20 major domestic leagues. Home wins occurred 49% on average through the regular season, which is the joint second highest across all the leagues. We’re not sure if travelling those distances is the factor, or that their fans having to travel such distances is a factor, but in 2022 and in the US MLS, the home teams done good.

Looking at when both teams score in a fixture, it may be no huge surprise by now that the in 2022 and in the US MLS this also happened above an average amount of times compared to the top 20 world domestic leagues. In the US MLS in 2022 both teams scored in fixtures 59% of the time. This is the joint highest rate along with the German Bundesliga One. Comparing it to the lowest average rate, both teams scored in 18% more fixtures that in the Greek Super League in 2022.

So with pretty much everyone scoring pretty regularly, and in particular, when playing at home, how does the US MLS fare on keeping clean sheets? Not great. But this can’t be a surprise… In 2022 the amount of times where a US MLS team kept a clean sheet averaged out across the whole league as less than one in four games. On average across the league, a team kept a clean sheet 23% of the time. This is the joint 20th lowest rate across the world’s top 20 domestic leagues.

Analysing the stats on 2o22 US MLS corners, there is not a great deal to write here. They averaged 9.81 corners a fixture, which ranks them 10th highest across the 20 domestic leagues.

The rest you can also pretty much guess the outcomes by now. For Goals Over markets, they are near the top ranked for Over 0.5 Goals, Over 1.5 Goals, Over 2.5 Goals and Over 3.5 Goals. Basically in 2022, the US MLS was good for goals.
